چکیده

We study the azimuthal modulational instability of vortices with different topological charges, in the focusing two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The method of studying the stability relies on freezing the radial direction in the Lagrangian functional of the NLS in order to form a quasione-dimensional azimuthal equation of motion, and then applying a stability analysis in Fourier space of the azimuthal modes. We formulate predictions of growth rates of individual modes and find that vortices are unstable below a critical azimuthal wave number. Steady-state vortex solutions are found by first using a variational approach to obtain an asymptotic analytical ansatz, and then using it as an initial condition to a numerical optimization routine. The stability analysis predictions are corroborated by direct numerical simulations of the NLS. We briefly show how to extend the method to encompass nonlocal nonlinearities that tend to stabilize such solutions. 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Existence, stability, and scattering of bright vortices in the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We revisit the topic of the existence and azimuthal modulational stability of solitary vortices (alias vortex solitons) in the twodimensional (2D) cubic–quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We develop a semi-analytical approach, assuming that the vortex soliton is relatively narrow, which allows one to effectively split the full 2D equation into radial and azimuthal 1D equations. A variation...

Modulational Instability of the Higher-Order Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Fourth-Order Dispersion and Quintic Nonlinear Terms

The modulational instability of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation with fourth-order dispersion and quintic nonlinear terms, describing the propagation of extremely short pulses, is investigated. Several types of gains by modulational instability are shown to exist in both the anomalous and normal dispersion regimes depending on the sign and strength of the higher-order nonlinear t...

Modulational instability of dust ion acoustic waves in astrophysical dusty plasmas with non thermal electrons

Propagation of dust ion acoustic waves in plasmas composed of nonthermal distributed electrons and stationary dust particles is investigated. Nonlinear Schrdinger equation is derived to describe small amplitude waves, using the reduction perturbation technique. Modulation instability of dust ion acoustic waves is analysed for this system. Parametric investigation indicates that growth rate of...

Spatial coherence singularities and incoherent vortex solitons

We study spatially localized optical vortices created by self-trapping of partially incoherent light with a phase dislocation in a biased photorefractive crystal. In contrast to a decay of coherent self-trapped vortex beams due to the azimuthal modulational instability, the incoherent vortices are stabilized for large values of the spatial incoherence; this was confirmed by experiment. We analy...

Stability of the NLS Equation with Viscosity Effect

A nonlinear Schrödinger NLS equation with an effect of viscosity is derived from a Kortewegde Vries KdV equation modified with viscosity using the method of multiple time scale. It is well known that the plane-wave solution of the NLS equation exhibits modulational instability phenomenon. In this paper, the modulational instability of the plane-wave solution of the NLS equation modified with vi...
